Two children in critical condition after being hit by cars in separate incidents

A pair of children were hit by cars, leaving both in critical condition, in two separate incidents over Memorial Day weekend, police said.

An 8-year-old boy was hit while crossing the street near Kennedy Airport in Queens early Monday evening.

The boy, who was not identified, was hit by a red Toyota Corolla driving south on Sutphin Boulevard, near Rockaway Boulevard, at about 5 p.m. The boy was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

The driver remained on the scene.

In the first incident, a 7-year-old girl was seriously injured in a hit-and-run in the Bronx on Sunday, police said.

The girl, who was not identified, was just beyond the curb and crossing south on East 214th Street, near Paulding Avenue, in the Williamsbridge area when she was hit by a woman driving a black Jeep Wrangler at about 10 p.m. The woman, who was headed west, appeared to be swerving to avoid a double-parked car.

The little girl was found bleeding on the street and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where she was in critical, but stable condition. She suffered from a broken hip, pelvis and two broken legs, police said.

The driver paused after hitting the girl but then quickly sped off.
