Two sentenced in NY Tamil Tiger terrorism case

Two Canadians caught trying to buy missiles for the Sri Lankan separatist group Tamil Tigers in a 2006 sting on Long Island were sentenced to 25 years in prison in federal court in Brooklyn Monday.

The men, Thiruthanikan Thanigasalam, 41, and Sahilal Sabaratnam, 30, both of Toronto, pleaded guilty earlier this month to conspiring to provide material support to the Tamil Tigers and conspiring to acquire surface-to-air missiles and launchers. Two co-defendants were sentenced last week to 26 and 14 years in prison.

The ring was broken up in August 2006, after negotiations with FBI undercover agents in Mineola for the purchase of 20 heat-seeking missiles, 10 missile launchers and 500 AK-47s.
