Living in the city, we become accustomed to certain things: expensive drinks, traffic gridlock, sweltering summers and subway performers.
So it’s not often when something catches us off guard, but that’s just what happened when a woman upstaged a band of pole-dancing subway performers in a crowded car earlier this month – and she posted the video on YouTube for all to see.
(Story continues below video.)
Pole-dancing pro Tami Joy Schlichter and her friend were on their way home from a birthday party in Brooklyn when a group of performers started busting out moves on the center pole. Not to be outdone, Schlichter stepped up to twist and contort all over the pole, showing off the skills she learned at Body & Pole New York.
"I've encountered the performers before, and have always wanted to battle them, so I did! I laugh now, because I have more impressive moves I could have done.. who knew one had to be so prepared to ride the subway," Schlichter told amNewYork.
After Schlichter showed them how it's done, they asked her for help doing the move with her shoulder (you can see a few seconds of the lesson at the end of the video). But is it all fun and games for Schlichter, whose dancing placed her in the 2013 Atlantic Pole Championships?
"Pole dancing is a growing sport and artform," she said. "I've been doing it for 11 months now and can't believe how much I've grown. I am an event planner, and am going to start planning pole dancing events in the city to showcase this beautiful artform."
