There is something special about the holidays in New York City: All of the travelers who come from around the world, the energy you feel when you take a walk outside, the tree at Rock Center, the lights lining the streets. But nothing beats the feeling of being able to give back during this time. One thing I like most about the holiday season is it allows me the chance to give back to this community and thank you for being so supportive of me as a player, as well as supporting my team.
On Monday, I joined up with The Garden of Dreams Foundation, Madison Square Garden’s charitable organization, to celebrate Thanksgiving a bit early with some very special families from Children’s Aid Society in Harlem. I was grateful that a couple of my teammates, Kelenna Azubuike and Shawne Williams, came out to support me and surprise these families for the holidays.
As a Knick, I’m fortunate to have an organization like Garden of Dreams that works with not only our team, but the Rangers, Liberty, MSG Entertainment, MSG Network and Fuse to make dreams come true for children in crisis. It means a lot to me that they helped me fulfill my wish for the holidays, which was to host a special Thanksgiving Day event with some kids and their families who are not as fortunate as I am. To top off this perfect day, we were able to give out 300 Turkey Day meals, which made it possible for hundreds of families to celebrate Thanksgiving in their own special way.
To sum it up the day was full of priceless memories!
Aside from it being a busy holiday season, it is also a very busy time for the team. Coming off of a successful West Coast trip, it is now extremely important that we keep up this momentum and continue to jell on the court. We play Charlotte Tuesday night at home, and we immediately hit the road to play them on their home turf Wednesday.
Back-to-back games like that, although grueling, are a chance to fine-tune our game and correct any mistakes. After this trip, we’ll be back in New York with our families for the holiday, which will be an awesome break. Wishing all my fans, friends and family a very happy and healthy holiday!
Wilson Chandler, 23, plays forward for the New York Knicks.
