We're now using Facebook for Newsday.com's comment sections. Please see the FAQ and troubleshooting tips below for more information, and please let us know in the comments below if you have other issues to report.
Q: Why did Newsday change its comment platform?
A: Newsday.com has changed to Facebook commenting to enrich the discussion, as much conversation around our content is already happening on Facebook. While we realize that some commenters may not be happy with the switch, we are also hopeful that it will elevate the discussion by discouraging anonymous commenting.
Q: Do I need a Facebook account to comment?
A: Yes. It's free and easy to set up at Facebook.com.
Q: What if I don't want to log into Facebook in order to comment in Newsday?
A: You don't have to log into Facebook to view any Newsday content. However, you won't be able to comment on newsday.com unless you are logged into your Facebook account. Your newsday.com or Optimum account is not linked to any particular Facebook account.
Q: Where can I find my previous comments?
A: Using your newsday.com login email and password, you can log in to your account at Disqus.com to see all comments you have posted on Newsday stories, as well as on other websites that use Disqus. If you are an Optimum user, please use the email address associated with your Optimum account to log into your Disqus account.
Q: Where can I find the whole set of comments on an older story?
A: When viewing a comment from your Disqus.com account, click the link to "view in discussion" to see the other comments in that thread.
Q: I used to be able to flag a comment. What do I do if I see something offensive?
A: You can hide a comment from your stream using the X that appears on the right side of the comment when you hover over it with your mouse when on Newsday.com, or tap the "flag" button below the comment when on the Newsday app. You can also report abuse to Facebook after hiding an offensive comment.
Q: Can my Facebook friends see my comments?
A: No, unless you check the "Also post on Facebook" box when you are submitting your comment.
Q: Why does my Facebook photo and name appear in the comments section even though I haven't posted anything?
A: If you are logged into Facebook, your information will appear on the screen, but it is not visible to anyone else until you submit your comment.
Q: I can't comment anymore on the app. What's wrong?
A: As a result of Facebook commenting, you will only be able to comment in the new version of the Newsday app available Wednesday.
Q: I added my name and password, but I can't see the login button. How do I sign in to post my comment?
A: Occasionally the "login" button may not appear when trying to log into the comment section. An easy fix is to click into the field where you put your email or password and use the "Go" or "Enter" button on your keyboard.
Q: I am unable to log into the comments on the article page on the app. Is there another way?
A: Yes, you can also log in by going to the Facebook section within the Newsday app (available at the bottom of the menu you get by tapping the three bars at the top left). Choose the Facebook button and at the top of the page that shows the Newsday Facebook page, choose "Log In".
Q: My comment with a URL isn't live on the site/Comments are closed. Why?
A: In order to prevent spam, newsday.com has put in place strict spam guidelines which filter out URLs, close comment threads after three days and blacklist specific offensive words. This also fosters more productive conversations.
