MONPELIER, Vt. - The cargo ship captain held by Somali pirates says he didn't know at first that the gunshots that killedhis captors came from the U.S. Navy. He thought they were due to adispute among the pirates.
In an interview broadcast Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show,captain Richard Phillips says he heard the shots and dived for thebottom of the boat. He didn't realize it was a rescue until heheard an American voice.
Phillips, of Underhill, Vt., was taken by pirates when theyassaulted the Maersk Alabama on April 8. He spent the next fivedays as a hostage in a lifeboat.

He was rescued on Easter when Navy SEALs killed the remainingpirates.
Phillips says it felt like the rescue took five minutes, but itwas probably seven or eight seconds.
