AKRON, N.Y. - Authorities say sheriff's deputies had to break a car window to rescue a 1-year-old baby whose mother had left her child in the vehicle as she shopped in a western New York store.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office says someone called 911 after noticing a baby inside a car parked at the Dollar General in the town of Newstead, 20 miles east of Buffalo. Temperatures were in the high 70s at the time.

A deputy who arrived on the scene noticed the boy was sweating and looked distressed, so he smashed one of the vehicle's windows.
