Jones, Miller, Barrett

pace No. 1 Ohio State

Cardale Jones ended up getting the start at quarterback over J.T. Barrett and Jones threw for two touchdowns and ran for one in No. 1 Ohio State's 42-24 victory over host Virginia Tech last night.

Trailing 17-14 at the half, former starting QB Braxton Miller, now a wide receiver, scored on a 54-yard catch and a 53-yard run in the third quarter to give OSU a 28-17 lead.

Barrett got into the game in the fourth quarter and threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Michael Thomas.

Ezekiel Elliott carried 11 times for 122 yards and one TD. Jones went 9-for-18 for 186 yards and was intercepted once.

Rutgers taps LI's Laviano

Chris Laviano, who played at Holy Trinity High School, will be Rutgers' starting quarterback Saturday against Washington State, coach Kyle Flood announced. Laviano was suspended for the first half of the season-opening win because of a curfew violation. He took over at the start of the second half and hit all four of his passes for 138 yards and three TDs.


Nets, Jones reach deal

The Nets and free-agent guard Dahntay Jones have agreed to a non-guaranteed deal, according to Yahoo Sports. Jones, 34, has played for seven teams in 11 seasons. He appeared in 33 games for the Clippers last season. He has averaged 5.4 points in his NBA career.


Wise Dan retired

Wise Dan, a two-time Horse of the Year who had been preparing for a comeback from an ankle injury, has been retired after his trainer noticed a problem with a tendon. He was named Horse of the Year in 2012 and 2013, and ended his career with 23 victories in 31 starts and earnings of $7,552,920. -- AP
