Irabu wins Yankees debut

In his first outing as a Yankee, Hideki Irabu struck out nine in 62/3 innings and beat the Detroit Tigers, 10-3, before 51,901 at Yankee Stadium. Irabu retired the first six batters he faced, four by strikeout. He allowed two runs, five hits and four walks. Tino Martinez hit a three-run homer in a four-run third that provided all the support Irabu would need.
