Thomas B. Licari

BACKGROUND: Licari, 62, is running in a Democratic primary. He also is running on the Working Families line in the general election. His family has roots in Islip going back 80 years and he lives in Kismet with his family. Licari received a bachelor's degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1974 and a law degree from Widener University Delaware Law School in 1977. He is a member of the Kismet volunteer fire department, the Islip Rotary Club, the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, and the Kismet Association. He was a Suffolk County assistant district attorney from 1978 to 1980 and runs his own practice in East Islip.

ISSUES: Licari said he sees room for improvement with the way Islip has been managed, and he pledged "to restore faith in local government." His priorities include streamlining the bureaucracy for small-business owners, holding the line on taxes, and "eliminating the corruption and waste" in government. He has previously said he was interested in looking at how the town has enforced zoning and building codes in neighborhoods north of the Southern State Parkway.
