The undefeated Long Island baseball team was awarded the gold medal Sunday when its championship game against Central was canceled because of wet field conditions from Saturday's heavy rain. L.I. was 5-0 and CNY was 3-2, and when the game couldn't be played, L.I. earned the gold for having the best record.
"It's tough to run the table," coach Ben Bonaventura said. "We had a great tournament. All the college coaches here complimented our team for coming from behind."
Three of Long Island's victories were comebacks, including back-to-back 10-inning affairs Friday. Centerfielder Steve Goldstein of St. Dominic was Long Island's main power threat in the tournament, going 6-for-12 with five RBIs, plus he threw two runners out at home in one game.
This was Long Island's eighth gold medal in Empire State baseball and its third undefeated team.
Field hockey team can't get gold
A valiant effort by Long Island's scholastic women ended in the gold-medal round with a 3-0 loss to Hudson Valley. L.I. earned its second straight silver medal, and fifth in the last eight years. HV won its fifth straight gold. Trailing 1-0 at the half, L.I. put the pressure on with six penalty corners and two straight-on shots in the first 10 minutes of the half. But HV thwarted each attack. Mary Alice Moore led L.I. with two goals, and Olivia Cabral and Meghan Dombkowski each had a goal in the tournament. Goalie Lauren Brennan had 36 saves in the four games.
Ice hockey clinches silver
Goals by Tyler Young, Conor Lamberti and Brendan McGovern carried the L.I. men's scholastic team to a 3-1 victory over Central to earn the silver medal. Dalton Izyk made 23 saves.
Soccer bronze games
Goals by Winston Lyons, Vladislav Finn, Frank Guzman and Justin Connor led the L.I. men's scholastic soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Adirondack in the bronze-medal game. Nick Policastro and Jason Orban combined for the shutout . . . The women's scholastic soccer team lost on penalty kicks in its bronze-medal game against Hudson Valley. It was tied at 1 in regulation. Krista Fitzpatrick scored for L.I.
Wrestling's medal haul
Long Island wrestlers won a total of 25 medals at the Empire State Games. The scholastic medalists: Mathew Bradice, Mastic, 98, bronze; Erick Orellana, Bay Shore, 115, silver; Nick Accardi, Rocky Point, 123, bronze; Steven Rispoli, East Meadow, 143, gold; Joe Evangelista, East Northport, 154, silver.
