Way to Go! Levent Alpoge of Dix Hills

Levent Alpoge, a senior at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, is one of two recipients statewide of a $2,000 scholarship and Siemens Award for Advanced Placement issued by the Siemens Foundation for earning the most top scores on AP science and math exams in the state.

Alpoge earned the maximum score of 5 on six AP tests - biology, calculus BC, computer science AB, physics C: mechanics, physics C: electricity and magnetism, and statistics. "My school prepares us well, so I credit my teachers," said Alpoge, 17, who said the key to test-taking is to remain calm.

Alpoge was one of nine Long Island students named finalists in the 2010 Intel science competition and was a semifinalist in the 2009-10 Siemens competition for research he did last year at Yale University in Connecticut. The project studied algorithms used to analyze MRI scans on human blood vessels.

According to Alpoge, algorithms fail where a large vessel splits into two. He used geometric methods to improve the accuracy and speed of the algorithms through parallel processing.

He is president of his school's mathletes, vice president of Science Olympiad, treasurer of the Spanish club and Quiz Bowl team captain.
