The best weather of an otherwise cold and rainy weekend on Long Island is expected on Sunday when dry conditions, mostly sunny skies are predicted with highs around 56.

“We have some improvements coming in — some nice improvements as we go into Sunday,” said News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Von Ohlen. “Sunday, Monday we got two dry days — the next big chance of rain is Tuesday and also going into Thursday.”

David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton, said that in the past few weeks there’s been a persistent pattern of quiet and then unsettled weather that is expected to continue for at least the next week.

“It’s from an active jet stream pattern that drives the weather — it’s basically been going north to east across the U.S.,” Stark said. “It looks like the pattern’s going to remain for at least the next seven days.”

But Stark said temperatures will be near or slightly above normal for much of the week.

Von Ohlen said the Sunday turnaround is due to some “nicer weather coming down from Canada,” but he said not to expect more consistent springlike weather until the middle of this month.

On Sunday look for the mercury to climb to 57 in Coram; 53 in Oceanside, Lindenhurst and Setauket; 52 in Southampton; and 51 in Southold, Von Ohlen said. Seasonable overnight lows will be around 35 degrees.

Mostly sunny skies return to start things off on Monday before clouds move in later in the day. Highs will reach near 52, but rain moves in overnight when lows will again be near 35.

Tuesday will bring the next fast-moving spring storm, which will likely bring showers and perhaps heavy rain and a thunderstorm. Highs will be near 52, but it will be windy with gusts from 20 to 40 mph. The low will be 40.

A mix of sun and clouds is ahead for Wednesday with highs near 55 and lows warming up to near 42.

More showers put a damper on Thursday when another mix of sun and clouds is forecast along with late-day showers and highs near 56 and lows near 43.

Expect rain early on Friday when it will remain cloudy throughout the day. Highs are predicted near 55 and lows near 40.

Stark said the normal high for this time of year is about 54 and the low 37.
