Long Island gets partly sunny skies Wednesday, with daily highs pushing near 80 degrees, the National Weather Service said.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said to expect a mix of sun and clouds with perhaps a stray shower or thunderstorm.

Winds from the southwest are at 5 to 7 mph and shift to the west, the service’s Upton office said.

The service said the state Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air-quality alert for Long Island, in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The alert means outdoor air quality levels can have adverse health effects for those with respiratory issues, including asthma. The alerts are triggered when the Air Quality Index is above 100.

Hoffman said partly cloudy conditions continue Wednesday night and give way to mostly sunshine and highs in the low 80s on Thursday.

Hoffman said much of the extended Fourth of July weekend gets nice weather, with the threat of some scattered showers and thunderstorms on Friday.
