Moderate risk for rip currents

There's a moderate risk for rip currents Monday off ocean beaches in Nassau County and southwest Suffolk, according to the National Weather Service.

Such currents are "powerful channels of water" moving quickly from shore that "can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea," the service said on its Facebook page.

Rip currents can develop as a result of wind and/or wave conditions, the service said.

A rip-current risk is in effect for beaches west of Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton Beach.
