YEMEN: Militants tunnel out of prison

As many as 15 al-Qaida militants escaped early Monday from a prison in the southern port city of Aden, officials said, tunneling their way out in the second such spectacular jailbreak this year. A prison officer said they got out through an up to 130-feet-long tunnel, which took them to near a petrol station outside the prison walls. A security official said the escapees included 12 convicted in the killing of security officials and in a bank heist. Yemen is home to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which the United States considers the terrorist network's most active and dangerous offshoot.

ITALY: Workers strike against austerity

Workers angry about austerity reforms went on strike and held nationwide rallies Monday while investors turned skeptical about an EU pact to save the euro. Some Fiat auto plants were idled and a performance at La Scala opera house in Milan was canceled as unions kicked off the first of days of walkouts against spending cuts and tax hikes the government seeks to restore investor confidence.

BRAZIL: Lula making fast recovery

A 75 percent reduction in the size of a tumor in former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's throat has surprised his doctors and could put the popular showman back on the active political roster as early as March. The 66-year-old former union boss started his final round of chemotherapy on Monday at the Hospital Sirio-Libanes. Lula completed his second and final four-year term in 2010 but still wields considerable influence at home and abroad. His quick recovery will only enhance his messianic image for the poor and raise the possibility he could run again, as soon as 2014, if President Dilma Rousseff passes on re-election.

LEBANON: Rocket aimed at Israel hits woman

A rocket fired from Lebanon toward Israel fell short, seriously wounding a Lebanese woman, officials said Monday. It came nearly two weeks after rockets fired from Lebanon hit the Jewish state in the first such attack in two years. The rocket, fired late Sunday from the southern village of Majdal Silim, hit a home in Houla, near the border, the army said.
