IRAN: Accused Mossad agent hanged

State TV said a man sentenced to death for the 2010 killing of a nuclear physicist was hanged Tuesday. The broadcast said Majid Jamali Fashi, 24, accused of being an agent of the Israeli spy agency, Mossad, was hanged in Tehran in the morning. Tehran University physics professor Masoud Ali Mohammadi was killed by a bomb-rigged motorcycle.


SYRIA: Bomb damages UN observers' cars

The UN observer mission was caught up in a burst of violence Tuesday, with a roadside bomb damaging its cars just minutes after witnesses said regime forces gunned down mourners at a funeral procession nearby. No observers were injured in the attack in Khan Sheikhoun.


VATICAN CITY: Religious order priest fathered child

The Legion of Christ religious order was hit by its second scandal in a week with the admission Tuesday that its best-known priest, a prominent author, lecturer and television personality, had fathered a child. The Rev. Thomas Williams said he was "deeply sorry for this grave transgression" against his vows of celibacy and would be taking a year off. The Associated Press had confronted the Legion with the allegation lodged by a Spanish association of Legion victims. Other Legion priests were also accused of sexually abusing minors. The Legion has been beset by scandals following revelations that its late founder, the Rev. Marciel Maciel, fathered three children and sexually abused his seminarians.


COLOMBIA: Ex-minister escapes as bomb kills 2

A bomb targeting a former interior minister killed two people Tuesday and injured 19 others in the heart of Bogotá's commercial district, authorities said. President Juan Manuel Santos said the former minister, Fernando Londoño, was hurt but was out of danger. Santos said Londoño's driver and a police escort were killed in the bombing.


SOMALIA: EU attacks pirates from the air

European Union naval forces in attack helicopters conducted their first onshore raid Tuesday on a suspected pirate lair in Somalia. A pirate said the strike destroyed a supply center and set back operations. No deaths were reported in the attack on Handulle village.
