Jets win AFL title

Joe Namath threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Don Maynard with 7:47 remaining to send the Jets into the Super Bowl with a 27-23 win over the Oakland Raiders in the American Football League Championship Game at Shea Stadium. Daryle Lamonica drove the Raiders to the Jets' 12-yard line on the next possession before the Jets' Ralph Baker recovered a lateral behind the line of scrimmage with a little more than two minutes remaining to seal the victory. Lamonica had thrown for 401 yards and a touchdown. Namath was just 19-for-49 but had 266 yards and three touchdowns, with Maynard catching six for 118 yards and two scores. Running backs Matt Snell and Emerson Boozer combined for 122 yards on 30 carries. The Jets had lost to the Raiders earlier in the season in the famed "Heidi" game but won their last six games. The final one was Super Bowl III on Jan. 12, 1969 at the Orange Bowl in Miami. The Jets upset the Baltimore Colts, 16-7, to finish the season 13-3.
