Long Islanders used the hashtag #DayInTheLifeLI on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook Wednesday.
Newsday cartoonist Matt Davies participated by showcasing a typical day as Newsday’s cartoonist.
Follow his day in the pictures and videos below.
Good morning from Asharoken Beach.
@matt_davies_draws: I'm completely 💩 at social media-ing but agreed to post for Newsday's #dayinthelifeli. Good start: Duck Island Harbor, Northport.
@matt_davies_draws: 3 days left of school for my kids #dayinthelifeli
Heading into the 10:30 a.m. editorial board meeting.
Brainstorming post-meeting. "I throw around all types of word plays and see what sticks." #DayInTheLifeLI
Mid afternoon-ish Davies makes the trek across the Opinion department to editorial page editor Rita Ciolli's office. Some days the initial sketch of his cartoon idea gets an immediate roar of laughter and the OK, other days he has to sell it with some explanation. Either way deadline pressure starts now. #DayInTheLifeLI
First Davies inks his cartoon (aka uses his "sloppy" sketch as a guide to trace). That's a lightbox underneath his sketchpad which helps him to match the positioning of the lines. This takes around an hour. #DayInTheLifeLI
Let there be color! Stages of progress.
Scanning the cartoon and some tiny tinkering in Photoshop.
Finished cartoon for Thursday, June 22.
