That's the estimated number of people hit by gunfire each year in the United States, including the 30,896 who are killed, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. It estimates there are 12,791 victims of murder by gun, 16,883 suicides, 360 killed "by police intervention,'' and 642 killed accidentally, including 154 children and teens. Because of stronger gun control, New York is seen as among the safest states, ranking 46th out of 50 in 2007, with 5.07 gun deaths per 100,000. Louisiana was first with 19.87 deaths per 100,000.
