That's the number of service members fired since Congress passed the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law in 1993, which mandated the discharge of any openly gay member of the military. The U.S. Department of Defense statistics from 1994 through 2008 were obtained by requests from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.
