21 -- That's the number of helicopters from the U.S. aircraft carrier George Washington that finally responded to the desperate need to distribute emergency relief in the Philippines archipelago devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.

Aid poured in from around the world to help the 11 million affected, but even 10 days after the storm, most of the supplies were stuck at regional centers. The Filipino government was unable to get the basics of water and food to remote islands, and then inland, because the roads were gone. A disaster compounded.
