Editorial: Impressive pay for public servants

$175,818 -- That's the average annual pay of the 23 police officers of the Village of Amityville, according to the Empire Center for Public Policy. It's the highest in the state, but with Nassau County cops averaging $160,000, and Suffolk's about $151,000, Amityville isn't far out of line. This hefty pay is for jobs with exceedingly generous vacation, holiday and sick-leave policies, and the figures here don't include benefits that add another 30 or 40 percent to the cost. The key question is, Can public servants continue to fare so much better than the public they serve?
