Incumbent Michelle Schimel’s decision not to run opened up this North Shore seat. Vying for it are Democrat Anthony D’Urso and Republican Matthew Varvaro, both of Port Washington. D’Urso, 77, a former North Hempstead Town councilman, spent the last decade doing humanitarian work. Varvaro, 25, most recently worked on former Gov. George Pataki’s presidential campaign.

Varvaro advocates ethics reform for state lawmakers and tying testing to teacher evaluations in schools. He emphasizes the need to further address the heroin epidemic and environmental issues like water quality.

Varvaro demonstrates an understanding of state and district issues, and a passion for working on them. D’Urso lacks a grasp of the basics of the property tax cap, the importance of infrastructure improvements and the impact heroin is having.
