The 2014 award for chutzpah has been won, hands down, by former Vice President Dick Cheney ["The hawks got it wrong," News column, June 22]. He's actually trying to blame President Barack Obama for the turmoil in Iraq while trying to justify his orchestration of the disastrous 2003 invasion of that country.

His claim then was that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction; now Cheney says he knows Hussein was going to develop them and that's why we went to war there.

Instead of going after Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan, who was the legitimate target, U.S. leaders let him get away. Had bin Laden been captured, it probably would have taken the air out of al-Qaida, and all of its offshoots that developed in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East may never have gotten off the ground.

So, Mr. Cheney, congratulations on this award.

Albert Kutzin, Melville
