The residents of Elmont continue to hold their breath waiting for the Empire Development Corp. to choose a development plan for Belmont Park’s south parking lot [“Rally presses for soccer stadium in Elmont,” News, May 4].
There has been much discussion among residents. Unfortunately, we have not been given enough input on a plan that affects the daily lives of all in our community.
Years ago, this was the go-to area for young families. It is a short ride to the city, the airports and the beach, and has nice homes with yards and good schools. For schools to survive, they need new students each year. For neighborhoods to survive, they need young families to build on what was started by those who have moved away.
What attracts people to an area is a thriving school district that reflects a solid community. We need to show that we have an interest in the future as a whole. A soccer stadium could fall flat, and we shouldn’t opt for just a quick way to grab the money and run.
