My deepest thanks to Lane Filler for stating so clearly and eloquently what makes America truly great in his column “The ideals of America are exceptional” [Opinion, Feb. 8].

His words echo those of Joy Hakim, author of the educational series of books, “A History of US.” She said, “We have perfection as our goal: liberty and justice for all. Can we attain it? Of course not. But the story of our struggle in that direction is, as the kids say, awesome.” May it be ever so.
