“The GOP really wants a nanny state” is a typical cherry-picked opinion written to mislead the public [Opinion, July 25]. While I’m not affiliated with any political party, I am conservative, and I would be remiss to let writer Catherine Rampell’s rant go unanswered.

Conservatives believe immigrants should come to the United States legally and work for a living. We believe banks should have rules, such as the Glass-Steagall Act. Its repeal in 1999 was a major factor leading to the 2007-08 financial collapse.

Democrats believe that they need to enact legislation to stay in power. Their federal assistance programs, coupled with their votes for taxpayer-funded programs, will ensure that Democrats stay in power for a long time.

Conservatives believe there should be a level playing field that gives all individuals a chance at success and that the people, not the government, are in charge of our own lives.
