I am writing in response to "Plan to help fish move to ocean" [News, May 11]. Government and environmental groups are building a concrete culvert to connect the ocean with Wreck Pond in Spring Lake, New Jersey. It's very important that this plan succeed.

The existing narrow passageway between the pond and the ocean makes it difficult for fish to travel. An inability of fish to travel to breed can cause the population to decrease, which may disrupt a food chain.

Herring is a fish that has difficulty reaching the sea. Herring has a commercial importance as food in many parts of the world. A decrease would hurt local fisheries.

Also, the culvert plan could create more jobs. Therefore, it would be beneficial both environmentally and economically.
