Letter: Excellent VA care deserves coverage

The Department of Veterans Affairs' Office of Inspector

The Department of Veterans Affairs' Office of Inspector General released a preliminary report Wednesday, May 28, 2014, stating the patient care at the Phoenix VA hospital was compromised and that scheduling issues are "systemic" throughout the VA hospital system. It was refreshing to read Newsday's "Timely salute" [News, April 9] about the care our veterans are receiving from Long Island's Department of Veterans Affairs. It's time we said something good about the VA and the care it provides those who proudly served our country.

My brother Mickey, who suffered severe head injuries in Vietnam, has been in the Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago for many years. He has always received excellent care from a dedicated staff. In fact, last year he was moved into a state-of-the-art Green House community, which provides a comfortable home-like setting staffed 24/7 by caring professionals.
