Letters: Female-only pool hours problematic

The article “Females-only pool hours OKd” [News, July 7] informs us that Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration will allow female-only swimming at some New York City pools. A pool at the St. John’s center eliminated male-only swimming. I suppose male-only swimming is discriminatory, while female-only swimming is not.

The parks department spokesman said, “Women-only swimming hours provide an important accommodation to New Yorkers who may feel more secure and comfortable in a single-sex environment.” What about New Yorkers who would feel more safe and secure in a white-only or black-only environment?

This is plain discrimination for a particular group. Is that what de Blasio’s administration stands for? Discrimination like this must not be supported by taxpayer dollars.

As to the female-only swimming hours in Brooklyn, does this mean that Muslim women will also now have a segregated time to swim?
