Newsday could not spell it out any more simply: “Senate backs end to rule on coal debris” [News, Feb. 3].

As our new president and Republican-dominated House of Representatives and Senate continue their goal of delegitimizing former President Barack Obama and erasing his legacy, they continue to exhibit how low they will go.

Why would anyone wish to lift protections on waterways from dumping coal debris? To save jobs? Are there not jobs for those who oversee the existing rule keeping local waters safe?

Second, how absurd is it to remove the gun-control regulations on background checks for those “mentally incapable of managing their own affairs”? During previous, heated gun debates, wasn’t this an area in which both parties appeared to agree? This smacks of President Donald Trump’s pledge to placate the National Rifle Association.
