When did Republican Party candidates forget the things they were supposed to learn in kindergarten? Clearly, they are rewriting the rules of social conduct and common decency just in time for teachers to introduce a lesson in "the Republican way" this September. Enjoy the new rules.

Be a bully and shout the loudest -- this is from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Donald Trump. Military service is no longer the honorable thing -- especially if you were a POW like Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) or a decorated war hero like Secretary of State John Kerry -- thanks, Trump and Jeb Bush.

And if you don't like the man or his politics, then you don't have to respect the office of the president -- thanks, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson. There really are no sacrosanct moments in history -- thanks to Arkansas' Mike Huckabee.

As a retired teacher, I'm so happy that I don't have to teach my students these new ways to get along in the world. It was so much more civil when respect and decency were the watchwords of the day.
