Letter: LIRR fares growing too expensive

I’ve been riding the Long Island Rail Road for more than 46 years. When I first started, the monthly fare was about $36.

Now the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is asking for a fare increase of 4 percent to 6 percent [“Debate on MTA fares,” News, Dec. 8]. This seems like a small amount, but it really isn’t.

What the MTA should do is to get rid of a lot of dead wood. Do what organizations do: Downsize, offer early retirement, lay off employees.

The monthly fare from Penn Station to Huntington is $338. How much more can it go up? It’s getting out of hand.
