A recent letter writer claimed that shutting down the school-zone speed cameras endangers children ["Speed camera shut-down unwise, May 27]. However, I have yet to see statistics on how many children were injured in the pre-speed camera period.
The placement of crossing guards is a much more effective deterrent than speed cameras. Of course, placing crossing guards doesn't produce revenue, which I believe was the chief motivation for the speed cameras.
