Regarding “Northwell buys heart group” [Business, Oct. 12], it seems that Northwell Health is attempting to acquire every major practice on Long Island. I understand the economic reasons behind all these practices joining Northwell. Most of them cannot afford to stand alone any longer.
Unfortunately, this is not always good for patients. My cardiologist, whom I’ve been seeing for many years, joined Northwell a short time ago. To my great surprise, this brought an unexpected facility fee on top of my regular copay.
I called the billing office and learned that these fees could range anywhere from $20 to hundreds of dollars, depending on the procedure. It seems the patient is getting the raw end of the deal.
