Newsday's series on Long Island's heroin epidemic is especially timely in light of the upcoming November elections ["Cartel does big business," News, June 2]. Unlike the campaigns of two years ago, when candidates were AWOL on the drug issue, maybe this time will be different.

Newsday has done its part over and over again, and voters should demand the same of elected officials. There is much more that needs to be done, and many of our elected officials have let us down. Let's hold them accountable in November.
