I conditionally support Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's plan to "Raise the Age" this legislative session and improve how the criminal justice system treats minors ["Push to stop 17-year-olds from facing trial as adults," News, March 2].

My condition is that the age not be raised for violent 16- and 17-year-old offenders, who should continue to be considered adults. Obviously, "violent" must be defined clearly. A slap of the hand is not a pistol-whipping. Also, for crimes committed with a firearm or knife, where injury results, the age should not be raised.
