Hippocrates had the answer thousands of years ago: Allow the body to heal itself [“Youngest drug victims,” News, Dec. 22].

Years ago, my friend sat on the couch and watched TV all day because her legs hurt. The doctor examined her and told her she needed to walk more. Nowadays, she would have demanded a painkiller.

Her dad had a persistent cough. Nowadays, he would have wanted cough syrup.

Both painkillers and cough syrup can be addictive. When no serious condition is indicated, perhaps no drug should be taken.
