Letter: Teachers are qualified for boards

Now Newsday seems to be joining Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in teacher bashing. People quoted in the article "Elections raise fairness issues" [News, May 17] seem to suggest that teachers should not be allowed to serve on school boards.

Do these people believe that any teacher on a school board would ignore district issues and automatically side with teachers? This is just not true.

We are professionals, as are doctors and lawyers, but with special knowledge about teaching and learning. Our viewpoint is especially needed now because of New York State's inability to effectively implement the Common Core curriculum and teacher evaluations.

As a retired teacher at the seventh- to 12th-grade levels and a college education professor, I am truly offended by this view, which suggests that teachers are second-class citizens who are not qualified to serve.
