I have read with interest articles about crossing safety, red-light cameras and police targeting those who text while driving [“Cops to target texters,” News, April 9]. What they have in common is that our roads are becoming more unsafe.

Rear-end accidents are, in most cases, avoidable collisions. The driver who causes the collision is usually distracted, speeding or following too closely.

We need higher penalties, more education and many more traffic cameras. Our police patrols cannot be everywhere.
