With regard to “Feds: Test train operators for sleep apnea” [News, Dec. 3], this is absolutely a mandatory step to protect human lives.
Another response would be to hire a co-engineer, the same concept as an airplane co-pilot. This would create employment while avoiding catastrophes.

A lawsuit filed by the former engineer who fell asleep at the controls of a Metro-North train that derailed and killed four people is a perfect example of what’s wrong with today’s society [“Suit over rail crash,” News, Dec. 2].
Does he really believe it’s the job of the train to keep him awake while he’s working, or for it to automatically apply the brakes? Things will get better only when people start taking personal responsibility for their actions instead of blaming everyone and everything else for their mistakes.
