Genetically modified organisms should be labeled as such in New York State [“Mandatory GMO labeling hurts farms,” News, March 25].
Vermont’s labeling law will go into effect July 1, and 64 other countries label GMOs.
The public has a right to know what it is eating. Especially without a scientific consensus on the safety of GMOs, we need to label food so families can be informed. Mars, Campbell’s Soup, Kellogg’s and other companies already voluntarily label GMOs. Let’s make it mandatory.

I’m writing in support of the bill in the State Legislature that would require labeling in the state of all genetically engineered foods. Polling shows that more than 90 percent of Americans support GMO labeling. GMO crops are designed to withstand the application of toxic pesticides and herbicides. I believe it’s a basic human right to know what we eat and a simple freedom of information.
