Letters: Series about volunteers welcome

Giving back to others can be emotionally

Giving back to others can be emotionally fulfilling while creating a difference in your town or neighborhood. Long Island charities and nonprofit organizations are always in need of a helping hand, offering a variety of opportunities for you to pitch in and give back for causes that are close to your heart.

The Long Island Volunteer Center is an expansive resource of current volunteer listings across Long Island, with the ability to search for certain causes and for opportunities close to your area.

Also, check out some notable Long Islanders opened their hearts and gave back on extraordinary levels in 2014.

After weeks of being exposed to endless images of angry mobs and violent demonstrations, I felt thankful for Newsday's stories about people acting out of love rather than hatred ["Volunteer nation," LI Life, Jan. 4].

When we get a steady diet of reports of violence and hatred, we start to see the world as an evil, threatening place. Your series was so refreshing.

I hope your stories will provide positive role models and inspire others to similar charitable activity.
