I appreciate your editorial’s suggestion to mitigate the onerous burden New Yorkers face from the cap on federal deductions for state and local taxes [“A roadmap to ease SALT cap,” Editorial, Jan. 11].

I wish I could be more optimistic. Sen. Chuck Schumer and the rest of our Democratic delegation seemed to prefer to man the ramparts of “the resistance” rather than sit down with President Donald Trump and Republicans to negotiate a better deal when new tax legislation was crafted in 2017. Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and the rest are going to have to discard their hyperpartisan tendencies if they really want to help New Yorkers.
