Thank you to Newsday for your story “Suit over jail medical care” [News, July 12]. The story is an important reminder that the rights of incarcerated individuals matter, and we must protect against abuses of power.
I work with Adopt an Inmate, a nonprofit organization that seeks to reform the prison system and honor the rights of incarcerated people. I share the stories of incarcerated women, and I donate a portion of my profits to Adopt an Inmate.
In my work, I’ve been reminded of our shared humanity. When we do not value the lives of others, including our neighbors in prisons and jails, we dehumanize ourselves. Civil rights in and out of prison are essential.
