Why are bus users the first victims?

A Nassau County panel on Thursday, Feb. 16,

A Nassau County panel on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, approved a plan to eliminate 10 NICE Bus routes and reduce service on four other routes in the system. Many more routes will see smaller cuts, including to weekend service. The changes take effect on April 9. Credit: Steve Pfost

It’s very disturbing to read that the company that operates Nassau Inter-County Express buses is cutting essential routes throughout the county [“Thousands to lose ride,” News, Feb. 17].

I’m sure that Nassau County can dig much deeper to avoid these cuts. So many people rely on public transportation to get them to their jobs and medical appointments. These riders often have no other means of transportation, so these cuts may affect their livelihoods, especially those who provide health care to homebound patients.

I don’t understand why those who need and rely on public transportation are the first to have their services cut.
