A Mets vs. Cubs National League playoff series is against all odds. So is the idea that cartoonists in rival cities would collaborate in their lament for long-suffering fans. Matt Davies and Scott Stantis are good friends but rooting for different teams.
Matt Davies: Scott Stantis and I go way back. He's the vaunted editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune, and I draw for Newsday. But we haven't known each long enough to have ever collaborated on a Mets/Cubs championship bid cartoon, for reasons we all know well.
When it looked like it could happen, we chatted in disbelief about a two-city artist collaboratiion, drawn in between our regular editorial duties. Hope it makes you smile as much as it did us.
Scott Stantis: My good friend, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York cartoonist Matt Davies and I thought it would be fun to jointly draw a cartoon about the National League Championship Series between the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets.
During the course of our brainstorming last week, Matt bemoand the fact that the Mets haven't won a Wolrd Series since 1986. Which seems like a long time until you compare it to the Cubs, who haven't won one since 1908. It's a small victory, but those are the ones you get when you pull for the Cubbies.
