1957 - That's the year Smithtown last adopted a master plan to guide development in the town. No wonder Smithtown seems so locked in the past.

The plan analyzed such issues as population, transportation and natural resources; its data and conclusions are 57 years old. A redo is overdue.

Town planners are working on recommendations for an update and should finish by January. For stagnant downtowns in Kings Park and Smithtown and other areas ripe for rejuvenation, a modern plan beats a 1950s artifact.
