Starting today, with this new Up on the Board feature, the editorial board will be blogging about what we just discussed at our weekday morning meeting. These meetings are where we talk about the news of the day and hash out our positions for the opinion sections of Newsday, Newsday Westchester and amNew York.
With the events in Boston developing so quickly, the editorial board decided to throw out our planned weekend coverage. As of now, instead of a reader-written Expressway for Saturday, Lane Filler plans to write a column about the fear we feel as we discover that marathon bomb suspects, brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsamev, grew up here and seemed to have the opportunity to grab the American dream. What went wrong?
We're holding open space on Sunday to consider the broader implications for immigration and foreign policy. Apparently, the Tsamev family emigrated to the United States from Chechnya and were given asylum a decade ago. We had planned an editorial for Monday about the immigration bill in Congress, but the events from Boston may affect that deal. We're staying tuned.
For amNew York for Monday, we'll most likely be writing about how everything has changed in a short week. Will we now be looking more suspiciously at our neighbors -- especially those carrying backpacks? If you see something, you're more likely to be saying something.
